lock

This foundational course is designed to introduce aspiring Behavioral Health Technicians (BHT) and Behavioral Health Technicians – Associate (BHT-A) to the essential roles, responsibilities, and expectations of working within Virginia’s behavioral health system. Whether you're just entering the field or transitioning into a new role, this lesson equips you with the core knowledge needed to provide effective, ethical, and compassionate care to diverse populations.

Participants will explore key service settings such as Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), Mental Health Skill-Building (MHSS), and outpatient programs, while learning to navigate supervision requirements, documentation standards, and client care procedures. The course also reviews Virginia Board of Counseling guidelines for certification, mandatory trainings, and professional conduct.

Emphasis is placed on client-centered care, ethical boundaries, and the importance of supervised practice in compliance with Medicaid and DBHDS regulations. Interactive discussions and mini assessments are included to reinforce learning and prepare participants for further training and credentialing.

She obtained her Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from Concordia University in 2012, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Social Aetiology of Mental Illness (SAMI) training program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Her research interests include the role of cultural factors in emotional processes and cultural variations in symptom presentation of depression and anxiety.
